What are your thoughts?

I have some problems with this for my own reasons. Ill start out. Lets ignore the "I want to help people" part for this, you do you.

  1. If I opt-in for organ donation, why does a company get to make tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars on it. Why can I not require this to be done at-cost or allow my family to get some of the $$$ paid for my organs.

  2. Same argument for blood. I have a uncommon (but not rare) blood type. Why do you get to make a bunch of money off this? If I want to donate I want it done for free or at cost. If you profit from it, I should too.

I feel like every other month the local medical establishment calls for blood donations because they are at "critical levels". Then I read that companies that take donations make a LOT of money off of what you donate to someone else for "free" (who then are charged a stupid amount of money). If I donated it, Other than cost of transport, storage, administration, it should be free. (In my mind) but they charge so much for it that a HUGE amount of blood donated in America is sold all over the damn place. It's a fucking scam.

I am all for doing this out of the goodness of your heart. I just hate seeing that a company can profit off of it where I wanted to do something selfless and for the benefit for someone else with no expectation of anything. This is why I would want to be able to check a box saying "this donation must be at-cost and no more". I know that can still be abused and they will find loopholes. I just don't go out of my way to make some company money off of my labor/blood/etc. (Giving blood is still labor, you have to take time out of your life to do so).

Well, what do you think? If you are in the industry and can point out that I am wrong and don't know what I am talking about, please post some sources. I would appreciate it.

Same here. Uncommon blood but not necessarily "rare". As far as blood goes, O which is the most common blood type is highly in demand because it is the "universal donor"; in particular, O- which as no antigens on it's surface.

AB- blood, while considered the "rarest" is "univeral recipient". Can donate only to AB- but can receive any blood type.

Millions are made on donation and transplant while donor families get a hearty "hey thanks you're so generous!" Recipients pay through the nose for the transplant and ensuing live long anti-rejection drugs and coincident infections and/or diseases that occur in the recipient.

An organ transplant recipient trades one disease for another.

One of the reasons families are not paid or rewarded for organ donation is purely because people can be vicious. Need money? Kill the kid. Kill the spouse.

"Must be at cost". "At cost" is per organ. A kidney will and cost almost 100k usd. With the workup and evaluations involved that can go up to half million dollars. Generally these people are on govt medical insurance because they're often disabled from their illness.

Aint nothin' free.
