It's all about the money.
What are your thoughts?
I have some problems with this for my own reasons. Ill start out. Lets ignore the "I want to help people" part for this, you do you.
If I opt-in for organ donation, why does a company get to make tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars on it. Why can I not require this to be done at-cost or allow my family to get some of the $$$ paid for my organs.
Same argument for blood. I have a uncommon (but not rare) blood type. Why do you get to make a bunch of money off this? If I want to donate I want it done for free or at cost. If you profit from it, I should too.
I feel like every other month the local medical establishment calls for blood donations because they are at "critical levels". Then I read that companies that take donations make a LOT of money off of what you donate to someone else for "free" (who then are charged a stupid amount of money). If I donated it, Other than cost of transport, storage, administration, it should be free. (In my mind) but they charge so much for it that a HUGE amount of blood donated in America is sold all over the damn place. It's a fucking scam.
I am all for doing this out of the goodness of your heart. I just hate seeing that a company can profit off of it where I wanted to do something selfless and for the benefit for someone else with no expectation of anything. This is why I would want to be able to check a box saying "this donation must be at-cost and no more". I know that can still be abused and they will find loopholes. I just don't go out of my way to make some company money off of my labor/blood/etc. (Giving blood is still labor, you have to take time out of your life to do so).
Well, what do you think? If you are in the industry and can point out that I am wrong and don't know what I am talking about, please post some sources. I would appreciate it.
