We had an emergency at our house and had to file a claim with our homeowners insurance. We've never had to deal with this before or working with the insurance adjustors. We're not trying to take advantage of anyone but also trying not to be taken advantage of. They are inventorying all the items in the house a lot of which is considered "total loss". I just don't know how the budget works. There are multiple cleaning/ repair companies involved all of which need to be paid. They are sending us an allowance to buy clothes and food with but no one seems to be able to say just how much we are entitled to or just how much we can spend/replace yet. Does anyone know how this works? Looking at my policy I see different "limits of liability" $ amounts for "dwelling, personal property, etc" but I'm guessing we're only entitled to exactly what needs to be replaced? If anyone can shed any light that would be very helpful. Thanks

Yes, I do. I am a contractor and almost all of my work is done through insurance companies. Also, my wife was an insurance adjuster for 20 years.

First word of advice: do NOT get a public adjuster. Your policy has stated limits and that is all your policy will pay no matter the circumstances of the claim or the loss you suffered. Public adjusters get paid out of YOUR proceeds. Don't do it.

Your policy will state how much you get for housing, food, clothing, etc. You need to go visit your agent and go over your policy very carefully.

I would also get multiple bids for a contractor, see if you can find one who has previous insurance adjusters working for them.

Please feel free to contact me for more information. I do this stuff every day.

What was your loss? Make sure the mitigation companies don't suck up all the money in your policy. Some will milk it for every dollar they can by leaving equipment sitting around that they are billing for daily.

I'm here to help if needed.
