I have 4 dogs, daughter has 3. We take them frequently to the mountains and while they are mostly obedient, sometimes one will take off when distracted. We've had a few close calls. Any input is appreciated.

We used to sell them at the store I worked at during Covid. High returns because (at least the brand we carried) didn't work well. Also had issues with moisture, but this was the PNW so water is a norm there. I'd say if you needed real dirt, a trip to Cabela's or Bass Pro would be where I'd go to start

@boone you mentioned these one time for your dog iirc and needed a replacement battery for one

I have a mostly obedient dog, but she is prey driven, so deer sometimes gets her running. We have a whistle (whistle.com). In normal mode, it lets us know when she leaves the yard and can be a bit laggy. In search mode it is much better. It does require cell reception, so not great for hunting dogs use Garmin Alpha for that, but where we are it is great.

Thank you! I will check that out.

I'm a little late to the party here but since no one else is giving you a good answer I will chime in.

I run the Garmin alpha system with my bird dog. I can track him up to 9 miles and there is no lag. I think you can track up to 20 dogs at a time. You can see them on the screen on a map and you can even tell what direction they're moving. It also connects to my watch and I can have an arrow pointing right at him at all times.

It's expensive but I know exactly where my dog is at all times. The collars have tone and shock capability. When I want to recall my dog I send the tone to him and normally that works and he comes back. Occasionally if he is over excited or whatever and he does not return to me I will hit him with a momentary electric stimulation which he is very sensitive to and he comes running back.

Quick look and it is expensive, but definitely worth thoroughly exploring. Thank you VERY much! One of our girls was lost for a couple of hours in the mountains a few months back. Don’t want a repeat of that.

It is expensive, for sure. I run the TT mini on my dog, it was expensive. The controller is expensive. You gotta break it down to how much is your dog worth? My dog and his training is worth every damn penny that setup cost me. And when he is gone and I get a new dog well then he will be sporting that same collar. You're gonna need the remote and a collar for every dog in your pack. If you're serious about wanting to keep your dogs safe then you will see the value.

That’s just the thing, if it prevents even one dog from getting lost, it is absolutely worth it times 7 lol. And I can probably pare that down to 4. Two of my pack are pretty geriatric and are never far away, and one in the pack is a sissy boy (the Rottweiler, go figure), and won’t leave his human mama’s side. Thanks again for the info, greatly appreciated.

If you are suburban or urban, an air tag will work fine.

I thought about that, didn’t look further into it, but I’m neither urban nor suburban. I’m not too far from town, so it would likely work for home use. It’s when I’m in the mountains I want better security for the pups. They are mostly obedient, but one scare with one dog was enough to prompt action on my part.

Best option here would be to get one of those dog harnesses with zip pouches and put in it a smartphone with Google Maps location share on, or with any other apps that can show you location of other phones.

That’s an interesting idea, thank you.

Everything I’ve seen or used has such a bad lag it wasn’t worth using I now use a shock collar with a sound and vibrate button I’ve only had to shock her once

You should check out the Garmin Alpha. No lag at all.

Thank you for the input. I have one shock collar (I hate even calling it that), and it has a light, but no sound. Unfortunately, not practical for 7 dogs.
