My Root Canal...

8 hours in the chair. Anesthesia wears off at 5 hours in. Continue without. Intense pain for 3 hours. Drilling done by hand due to the roots going in at an angle...

5 Years Later...

Same tooth, crown fails and tooth breaks off.

Tooth extraction - 15 minutes DONE!

Fuck that Root canal shit! Never again!

I think root canal is intended to keep the dead tooth in the mouth as long as possible with the end result eventually an extraction. I haven't yet had a root canal but would root canal a tooth if there was insurance that covered most of the cost.

I hate dentist visits.

I had one dentist spent the entire session of work bragging about how he trains other dentists on fillings etc. A piece of his filling work fell out 10 or more years ago (right near when he put it in) and I never had it fixed since it doesn't hurt, it's small, and was located on one of the surface inside peaks on a chewing molar and functions like a little chip on the tooth so doesn't interfere with chewing and can't be seen.

Same dentist office the assistant doing a cleaning was obviously sick, but still handling duties and of course I got sick after that visit. Top off with a filling piece that fell out and I never went back to that office.

I don't hate Dentists and I go for regular check ups.

The problem I have is this asshole KNEW my tooth wouldn't last very long due to the amount of drilling they had to due to get the roots out. He was even kind of surprised it made it 5 years.

Again, Fuck Root canals! They just want want to be able to milk your insurance for all it's worth and then you'll be back again in a few short years for another major milking session...

Depends on age really imho but root canals aren't as bad as they used to be. Request they use septocaine w/ an epi push and you won't feel much after the local numbing injections. I'd dare say the extraction would be way more painful these days but cheaper.

I'm not too concerned about the pain during either procedure. I'm more concerned about long term viability of the proposed fix. Seems like people commonly have follow up infections on root canal teeth and end up getting them extracted anyway. I'm on the fence on which path I should choose.

Yeah that does happen. I've had root canals twice on 2 teeth. The only 2 teeth i've needed root canals on. I'd say definitely if it was a front tooth but no ones gonna notice a missing back molar

Yeah dentist yesterday took some xrays and after studying it she said yeah, so we'll need to get you in for a root canal on this. How's next Wednesday? And I said why don't you just pull it? And she looked at me like I had just called her a niggerfaggot. Looks like dentists push the root canal path and I'm trying to understand whether I want to be pushed in that direction or not.

Supposedly now people are claiming root canal as a huge scam and really bad for your mouth because it destroys nerve roots, exposes the body to bacteria introduced by the procedure and weakens the jaw.

Truly depends. I've had a root canal. Took 3 hours. It was a tooth near the front though. If the tooth is at the very back (like the last tooth) then I'd say extraction. If it's in the middle, you might have problems down the road if gap is filled in wonky by the teeth in front of and behind.

I had one root canal,10 years ago, took two hours, no real pain, even after. The dentist was excellent, my regular dentist had the other DDS in the office come and admire the work. no issues since. Depends on the dentist, mine was an older White male. cost me a bit, but no regrets.

Root canal. Keep as many teeth as you can. I’ve had several and never a problem. Grateful I still have those molars.

I appreciate the recommendation

I have an extracted lower middle molar.

When you extract a tooth, another may break because of pressure distribution changes, so you may also end up with a crown.

There is a link between root canal fill and heart disease. I'm not expert, but check up on that if that would be a concern.

Implant didn't work for me and don't for about 5%. Try a single implant first before you commit to pulling a bunch of teeth! Good thing I only tried for one that molar. My gums grew between the screw and bone faster that bone could grow into screw.

Dentist will say top opposing tooth may grow into the gap. Mine has grown slightly but is not a problem after a decade.
