Fellow autists, my new baby has had trouble nursing properly and is struggling to gain weight. This hasn't been a problem for any of my other kids so it's new and very unpleasant territory. My wife is doing all the recommended things to boost milk production so it's a little easier for baby to eat and has been feeding baby extra breastmilk with a syringe/tube while nursing. It stopped the weight loss but it's extremely time consuming and won't work if anything slips with my wife's milk supply. The exercise has depleted the store of frozen breastmilk I had from when the older kids were nursing. I'm looking into options with the midwives to find someone who I could buy breaskmilk from in case of emergency but without knowing the pharmaceutical history of any potential donor that's a gamble. I have a few recipes for making formula using raw cow or goat milk. Does anyone here have experience with this or any recommendations?

Not raw milk for baby other than breast milk. If it were my baby I'd try goat's milk. It's not perfect but it's better than cow's milk (can cause milk allergy and bad for baby gut) and will help satiate baby while momma is able to restore herself.

Is baby preterm with a feeding tube? Have you looked into supplementing mother's milk with one of the high calorie "premie" formulas?

Best of luck and best wishes to wife and baby!

No real experience, but information and opinion.

I'd try to avoid formula as long as possible since I believe it's poison. Also, you might want to look up colostrum. I think that's the or one of the ingredients that makes babies grow.

Do you have a pediatrician the baby goes to?

The midwives are the pediatricians as well. We're taking the measures they've suggested to help improve the baby's feeding ability. I'm just looking for anyone's experience with making formula that isn't full of soy and whatnot.

Pediatricians are always stressing weight to get mom's on formula. One formula I knew used barley oat water, sugar and some other things too but it's been awhile since I read about it. At the time I concluded that was the best route and have since forgot the specifics.

I second goat milk. I used it for my older kid and she's fine. Smells awful if it goes bad so make sure you rinse everything really well.
