I think welfare and encouraging lots of kids probably factors into you’re theory here somewhere.
True, maybe the selective pressure is not as great as I'm anticipating because the fertility rate is so high. But still, even in a litter of 12, the 11 that survive long enough to reproduce are more likely to be the smartest 11.

True. Maybe the selective pressure is the opposite of what I imagine and it favors reproductive capability above anything else. Makes sense, since practically nobody can starve or die young of disease nowadays.
