Got an old Thinkpad that's soon retiring from gaming and I've been thinking about giving OpenBSD a try. I've been using various Linux distros for almost 5 years now (mostly Debian-based ones) and the BSD system doesn't seem too different from Linux. Is it worth a shot?

Yes! Give it a test run. I used FreeBSD for years back in the 1990's and I really liked it. Finally, however. I succumbed to the lure of Linux, with its wider acceptance and resulting ease of use and software availability.
