I am a programmer and my boss is an asshole that likes to push meetings on after work hours with his pointless waffle that makes me late for my own projects outside of work.

I suspect he's getting pretty pissed off with me so I'm looking for new roles elsewhere. We are generally told that online job boards like * LinkedIn * Indeed * Glassdoor * ...

are placed to find jobs but most of the time the jobs are out of date, full of hiring agencies or recruiters, and they're bombarded with CVs for a role that they've already filled and advertising it is purely a formality. So far the best thing I can think of is to try and attend tech conventions and speak to people (speaking to people - one of my least favourite activities) and I'm wondering if you guys have any other advice for job searching?

Short term I'm just looking for something to pay the bills, long term I want to start my own company.

Just stay away from Monster. That's degraded into nothing but offshore recruiters with junk jobs who will fill your inbox with all kinds of garbage that you're not qualified for - they just matched a keyword.

I know google is shit, but get a gmail address just for job searching, and get a google voice number for your search. You will need to tie it to your mobile, but can disconnect it after you sign up and verify. Your number already has been pwned by the credit bureaus, so keeping your number "private" is kind of moot at this point. gmail is also widely accepted by email systems, so you're going to have less problems getting through spam filters. Pick something reasonable for the name, i.e. EmployThistle or something. If your full name is available, maybe use it. Don't use "BeerFan1976" for your employment mail.

Do not use an email address or phone number you care about. Indians will use it for junk years after you have stopped looking and pulled your profile. They will spam the fuck out of you if you have any kind of technological keywords in your resume.

If there are specialized job boards for your discipline, search them out and use them first.

If you're in the USA, your state employment board is probably just Indeed or Monster. Worthless. USAJobs has a lot of stuff.

You're going to get a lot of silence, and even more static. Don't let that bother you, that's just the way it is. Always reply with a courteous thank you to those who send you something that's in your ballpark but not what you want. Remember that a lot of these recruiters are just finding these jobs online and sending them to you, regardless of what they say. Don't be afraid to grab juicy sections of the text and paste them into a search engine to find the company who actually posted it.

Don't worry about Kumar and all the other pajeets, they didn't even see your resume because a computer sent you the solicitation.

But most of all? Network. You need to talk to people. You need to send your resume to people. Call them. Don't sit around waiting for them to call you.

/u/CTCZ @CTCZ - I don't know if that'll ping a user.

Well my employer generally keeps us workers insular from the inter-business interactions and if there are business interactions they generally have to go through my employer first.

I guess conferences, events, and getting involved in "communities" are the best route for me.

That's a good way to find things, but don't be afraid to use the job boards. Just be on your toes. If it doesn't pass the smell test, it's probably bad.

I think my nose is pretty dumb on this smell test - I hate when people use round about language as I tend to take things quite literally and skim waffling; I don't like to waste time listening to someone who trying to fit as many business neo-lingo buzzwords into one posting.
