Ex AF here. It's against most city ordinances to do them near populated areas.
I've only ever heard a sonic boom a few times my entire life. I've always understood it to be irregular due to the fact that super sonic travel is prohibited over populated areas. I remember when O'bummer was potus and there was a small plane wandering too close to his AO in Seattle one day. They scrambled a couple fighter jets out of Commiefornia to intercept and those boys were cookin, two double sonic booms about a second apart. I didn't even realize what it was at first.
I used to live along a flight path that constantly had fighter jets scramble and haul ass. The rumor at the time was that Russians were invading U.S. air space just so we'd have to fire up jets to get there fast and waste a whole bunch of money doing so. When the fighters got close enough to the Migs, the Migs would turn around and go land at their nearby air field and laugh at all of the money they just caused us to waste.
Standard harassment and vulnerability probe tactics
Grew up next to a military base, there was also a state park nearby that was basically off limits for anything other that shore fishing from a few very strict spots.
The state park was known by locals to hold top secret military base.
Heard them all the time.
Before and after 2020 sometime I lived near a bunch of military bases. During 2020 the ground started shaking like earthquakes was never reported in the news but talked about by everyone.
Until I moved last year you could still feel the earth shaking.
It takes a lot of energy to push through the atmosphere fast enough to break the sound barrier.
Maybe Bidenomics has raised fuel prices so much that they can't afford to do it anymore.
Or maybe the new, diverse pilot-class is triggered so loud noises that they need PTSD therapy.
We were out about 20 miles into the Atlantic and a fighter jet dropped down and banked around us probably 100 feet away from the boat. He pulled up and did a sonic boom probably a mile away. It was loud and awesome.
Used to hear them regularly back in the '60's.
Technically a lightning strike is a sonic boom, I'm hearing those frequently this time of the year as its tornado season.
I guess you're referring to the phenomenon of fast aircraft breaking the sound barrier though..
Some remote tailer park recently experienced that.. heres a video regarding the incident with 911 calls included. The 911 recording is quite hilarious. https://youtu.be/k0iiyBiqeeo
I heard them when I was a kid and we vacationed in Florida. I've mentioned to my bf a few times that I haven't heard one since I was a kid and it seemed weird. We've watched a couple of SpaceX launches on YouTube and I noticed they weren't picked up but maybe they mute it?
I go to the air races regularly but it doesn't seem like they ever let the demonstration jets go supersonic.
I don't think I've heard one since the mid 90s.
