This was by far my biggest pet peeve as a kid (1960s). 95% of the other boys in my classes had longer hair cuts. My ex-Navy Dad made me get a Crew Cut until I was at least 10 years old. I hated them. The barber would use butch wax on the hairline to make the hair stand on end in front. I'll never forget that butch wax smell.

Even though he was infantry his hero was Patton. Blood and guts. That third one I think horrified him and he got far enough up the ladder he saw much like Patton did that it all wasn’t about what he thought it was. He ended up a master gardener in his later years.
