A strange oddity I have come across when visiting the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the State of Arkansas is the lack of consistency with the fonts used in their flags. There could be more instances of flags with inconsistent fonts, but these two are the ones I'm aware of.

Arkansas's flag seems to be the more consistent of the two, with the of the flag having a font similar to Arial Bold, whereas the uses a font more akin to Impact.

The font on Kentucky's flag is inconsistent both digitally and physically. Sometimes it's a tall serif font, other times it's just a plain sans serif font.

Does anyone know why this is the case?

Could go back to just whatever could be embroidered/sewn using the equipment on hand. Stencil sets available, or how fine a point the sewing machine can accomplish.

When was the last time those, or any other state flag, changed/updated?

The flag. Most state flags haven't changed since they were first adopted.

They are also all horrible! Varying shades of blue with the state seal on most...fucking terrible. There's a YouTuber that ranked all the state flags of the USA.

Three flags got changed this decade. Mississippi's original flag got cancelled and was replaced twice, with the latest design actually being quite nice, but still objectively inferior to the old flag. Utah changed their flag to something that isn't a state seal with a blue background. Minnesota got a new flag this year and it's just the Somalia flag with a few changes.
