So I'm thinking about buying a church. It's about 5,000ft² of living space. About 2.5x more space than my current house. Has a brand new metal roof, 3 bedrooms, and 2 baths. Even has a urinal in one of the bathrooms. New kitchen remodel with appliances. Plenty of room to build/add more bedrooms. Not to mention it's about $80,000 less than anything on the market that's even close in size, rooms, etc. The listing just popped up yesterday. After weeks of looking at overpriced homes with nothing really standing out. I won't lie, it kind of feels like a sign. Just curious as to how you guys would feel about living in a church.

If it looks like the inside is a space that you can decorate and add your furniture to and you like the layout then YES. Are there homes surrounding it? Or businesses and busy streets? Do you have plenty of parking for big parties? What's the rest? Can you 'work' from home and invite people to hear you preach?

It's located in a small town.

Are there homes surrounding it?

Yes, but one of the neighbors has a fenced in yard, and the property the church is also fenced in.

Do you have plenty of parking for big parties?

Yes.

Can you 'work' from home and invite people to hear you preach?

Lol. No I'm going to have to change the zoning so it's considered a single family home instead of a church. Although if I keep it zoned as a church I can avoid some taxes...

Be aware the change in zoning and what that will mean to your tax rate.

I'd leave it as a church and create some church related side business if you or your spouse have the time/interest. Rent the unused floor as a wedding chapel or reception hall? Bible Study?

There are videotaped Bible Studies (like Les Feldick) that could be played vs leading a bible study.

Now theres an idea, apply for your priesthood and set the place up for part time work for yourself as someone who marries people off. If you felt really crazy and feel God has lead you to become a pastor, definitely do that

Interesting concept to live tax free as a church zone, you'll need to throw those parties to have proof of a congregation.

Call it a parsonage and claim you're a priest

I could probably take some online classes to become a priest.
