I'm old so I have music files all on network media instead of these cloud services like Spotify or whatever.

As such, I have lots and lots of them and the playlist (and management of the listing) becomes cumbersome and even causes apps to hang or even quit. Any suggestions on playlist management in a music player, or an individual solution to either?

What players are suggested out there? I use windows (for Steam/gaming when I do), but am also experienced in many flavors of *nix.

VLC is a solid option. Been around forever, free, supports network media streaming (audio and video). Has a mobile app as well as desktop.

mpv (mpv.io) is the best choice of desktop video player. It can also play audio but it's geared towards being a video player.

These are my two answers as well. I I really only use mpv because there's some odd ball stuff that VLC kinda chokes on but mov will play it all. It just lacks a lot of the QoL features in VLC.
