I used to do that about half an hour to an hour before bed. It kind of works to fall asleep but not stay asleep and the antihistamines eventually start screwing with my mood and im just in a crap mood all of the time.
So you fall asleep but can't stay asleep?
Most of the time that seems to be the problem. Never really get to good deep sleep because of it. I have tried melatonin already, it seems to do nothing for me no matter how much or how little I take.
My guess.
You have obstructive apnea which causes you to stop breathing. Your body realizes to o2 levels are going down, so it kicks you out of REM sleep, then it wakes you via small dose of adrenaline so your conscious mind takes over and modifies the air passages so you breathe once again. Your body is reluctant to go back into sleep , as it feels there is danger you need to be awake for, so you make be awake for a few hours or until you relax enough to clear the adrenaline.
