Pickup trucks have always been important because they can haul and tow much more equipment than the average vehicle. However, for every person that needs the capabilities of a truck, there are ten more that drive it to attempt to achieve a social status, to create a facade of being country folks even though they live in a rich suburb of a city that is only Southern by a technicality, because nothing says country like driving around in a brand-spanking-new GMC Sierra and blasting Old Town Road.

But enough rambling, what are your thoughts?

You can pry my truck from my cold dead hands. Bed for hauling shit. Chain timing belt and strong engine means it'll run as long as I maintain it. 4x4 means I don't care about weather too much. Comfy ride. That said there are some real shit trucks out there. Research is needed to get a good one. But when you do, it's like no other vehicle.

Please tell me you have sufficient weight in the bed when it snows and aren't one of the people I have to push out of some snow that they got stuck in.

[–] 1 pt

Haven't had any issues with snow locking me in. But we also don't get feet like other places so. Most I've seen was a foot

[–] 3 pts

Then I am happy to share this with you before you ever run into it. The locking in isn't so much the issue, but spinning out in a little bit of snow or ice because your bed was empty is a problem. If you ever find yourself in someplace that has more winter than you're used to, remember to put some weight in your bed, even if you have to shovel snow in there and pack it in. That will stop you from spinning out like a chink changing lanes on a perfectly flat and dry stretch of road.

Yes they are but only because modern cars can't tow shit. I could put a boat in the water with my 79 Caprice. Can cars today tow like that, no.

[–] 1 pt

LOL. Yea, I thought my SUV could tow a boat. Boy was I wrong. 35 fucking hundred pounds! That's it! No boat for me. I guess it saved me a ton of money though. Cause I'm not buying another vehicle just so I can tow a boat.

Best two days of a boat owners life, the day they buy the boat.. and the day they sell that fucking boat.

[–] 1 pt

Can confirm.. I enjoyed the hell out of my 18ft lake runabout on the nice weekend days of summer, but 9 months out of the year the boat took up space in my garage. I'm thankful that I was fortunate to not have an major repairs.

I was certainly happy to be rid of it when it finally sold though.

It’s more of a gradient than a fine line between those two types, but yeah.

because nothing says country like driving around in a brand-spanking-new GMC Sierra and blasting Old Town Road.

My last 4 new trucks were GMC Sierras. Lol!

Most of the points here are on the great reasons to have a truck. I'll be devils advocate and point out the following: -In a big city, parking spots don't mix well with full size trucks. -When people know you have a truck, you can almost certainly expect to get calls from people, even ones you hardly know, wondering "what are you doing this weekend" whenever they need something moved or hauled.

On the good side: it is nice to be able to haul a boat, quad, pair of jet skis, snowmobile, camper or just to easily pick up new appliances or furniture yourself without having to wait for and pay some movers.

Big city... Fuck that place. Did a job in Brooklyn once. F350 dually, crew cab, 8' bed and a 12' dump trailer. Street cleaning day... Had to move. Found two and a half spots. Parallel parked that shit no problem. Lady that had also just moved her car watched with her jaw on the sidewalk. Couldn't believe I pulled it off.

Valid points, but to be fair, if you do live in a shoebox like NYC, Los Angeles, Denver, etc. and drive a truck or large wheel base vehicle, you're nigger tier stupid

[–] 2 pts

My woman has her SUV. I have a beater Nissan pickup for everyday and an older WRX for reliving my squandered youth. But when I need to move shit, I fire up the F-150 4x4 an get it done.

Guys getting big trucks for status and to seem country are more useful than other idiots. Having a truck doesn't make you an idiot, being complacent with fuel prices going up so you can't casually afford a truck is.

[–] 2 pts

New trucks have gotten to the point of being overpriced plastic hogs with too many computers. Older stuff is real and usable and durable. I prefer an IDI turbodiesel.

For starters, if it doesn’t have a full size bed, it’s not really a truck. So, it’s easy to spot the people who are larping as country folk with that short bed. 🤣

you can’t fit even half a bucket of cow mud into those cuck-trucks. 8 foot bed perfectly fits two pallets. Knowing that civilization is an hour away, making two trips is unacceptable.

Knowing this, it’s easy to spot.

Also, we keep things running forever- I’m still rocking a dually from the early 90’s. 400k miles. Still has cold air.

New shiny short beds are so cali. Gross.

[–] 0 pt

That's what trailers are for. Tighter turns, better handing and now I can haul 6 pallets.

I remember I had my 97 F-350 longbed single cab srw. Went to get gravel and had the guy load a yard into the bed. He looked at me and asked "are you sure?" Told him fuck yea let er rip. Drove home on the axle and was way too much. Handled it fine but I wouldn't do it again.

[–] 0 pt

You’re going to haul a trailer EVERY DAY and claim that you bought a truck for its tighter turns? Bro. What.

Seriously not trying to be a dick, but maybe we just have completely different levels of activity. We live on farms out here. We use that long bed just about every day. Better handling is for cars imho.

[–] 0 pt

I thought you were interested in input but clearly you can't conceptualize any use cases for a truck outside of farming. Not sure what century you're in but there are many trades outside of farming that require more than muh bedspace. My rub with you is this. Your failure to understand a use for something does not negate its usefulness by someone else.

A shortbed with a 16' trailer will make more than 2' tighter turns than a lwb model. 2' in most places I frequent would mean the difference between making a turn or making it a 3pt turn. Often my loads are more than the bed capacity of even a one ton. I can also transfer all braking wear for the extra weight to trailer brakes. No trailer, I can still haul 16' boards out of the back of my shortbed.

Grow up, theres a big world out there, you're not the only one.

My Tacoma tows my dump body trailer 5x10 when I need to haul.

I have filled that trailer with wet manure, two pallets of sod, it's a beast.

Tell me why I need a long bed on my daily driver when I can just hook up when I need the room?

[–] 0 pt (edited )

I think we’re talking past each other. People out here live on farms. I’d be using that trailer every day if I only had a short bed. Take the car to the dentist. The truck is for work.

The trailer I use is 20 feet long. Bit overkill when I really need a long bed for 99% of farm work.

[–] 1 pt

When you need one, no. If SHTF, probably no.

However there are a ton of people that just drive them around because. Those people are morons.

[–] 1 pt

I will say pickup trucks that are short bed, double cab, no towing package are SUVs in denial.

There is also a big problem when I can buy a day cab cheaper than a consumer pickup truck.
