Depending on your finances, you might consider getting both a toilet and sink plunger. Very useful! The cheap (practically disposable) drain snakes are also worth picking up.
Also, you may not be aware that there are safety can openers that DO NOT create a dangerous edge. It's 10$ more but far less than a trip to urgent care.
