What about guys who lived alone before getting married? Can we help?

  • beer
  • milk crates
  • scrap plywood
  • electric kettle
  • TP
  • sleeping bag and foam mat

Am I missing anything?

Zip ties and duck tape

I started my own little tape collection.

Bong Cum rag

[–] 4 pts

Rag is optional depending on the amount of the deposit

Missing from the list is a (new) cheap trash can upside down with cloth on top to make a table for one, and add a tosser office chair, and a F'd up stained couch that someone gave away to complete the living room. Eventually you can switch out the sleeping bag for a luxury inflatable twin size mattress.

Wire spool and plastic chairs for when you need to be fancy...

That sounds a little gay, but sure!

I moved out on my own in my early 20s and had to start from scratch.

In addition to the aforementioned toilet seat and cleaning products, you'll need cookware. Not just dishes and silverware, but pots and pans. At the very least you'll need a stock pot for pasta, sauces, and soups, a good cast iron fry pan for searing steaks, and an all purpose skillet.

Get yourself some good knives and a quality knife sharpener.
Also get; Coffee pot / tea kettle (depending on preference) a colander reusable storage containers for leftovers a dish-drying rack kitchen towels oven mitts

What's your budget like? Do you want to buy everything at once of a little at a time?

Towels and washcloths are nice too Sheets pillow cases Lots of big pillows on couches and beds for no apparent reason too for some reason

I actually had a pretty decent month money-wise, so I can get the neccessary items mostly all at once.

In terms of food, I have altered my diet sufficiently that I only need one nice pan for the meal I cook, one bowl, and one plate, and a nice glass resealable storage vessel.

I do occasionally drunk coffee, and am considering getting a mug as well.

I already have a water bottle, so I don't need a glass or anything.

What I really want is a desk and a chair, and possibly a bed. And I gotta get an internet connection...

Add spatula, wooden spoon, baking pan, sheet pan, broom, dustpan and cutting board to the kitchen list. Extra bath towels and a second set of sheets for the bed as well. Clothes hangers, laundry hamper or tote

I got a lot of these thing from the dollar store. Back when it was still a dollar. Thanks Joe Biden!

I had a standing shower, no tub and no shelf to put the soap on. I got a rack that hung from the shower head.

This, I feel what women "need" and what men need can be vastly different.

Toilet paper. Shower Curtain. Basic cleaning supplies, if you don't have them. Apartments are rarely cleaned all that well between tenants. They think new paint makes it clean. The floors are typically gross unless they were replaced just before you.

Everything else is stuff I'd expect most people to already have - dishes and silverware, bedding, etc.

Optional - new toilet seat. Dunno why but I'm grossed out and replace it every time I move.

Edited to add - New deabolt and keys. Just remember to give a copy to your landlord.

New toilet seat. I never thought of that one. Who knows how many nigger asses have shit fried chicken and watermelon into that toilet before you came along.

[–] 3 pts

Exactly. It's just so gross no matter how bleached.

[–] 4 pts

Fuck "if the walls could talk". How about the horrors apartment toilets have experienced.

The only thing I'd change about that statement is "optional." Toilet seats are on the must-have list of items for a new place. ;-)

A man, to take out the garbage...

Tons of household items are available at goodwill / salvation army. No reason to pay retail unless you choose to.

[–] 2 pts

Yes great advice. I also look at estate sales for my chemical cleaning supplies. They usually sell barley used bleach, toilette cleaners, etc. I have never bought the harsher products from retail.

[–] 3 pts

I'll save you a lot of time and money: go to your local thrift store, everything you need is there and cheap.

Thank you, the can opener and plunger are two items you always forget about until you really need them

[–] 1 pt

You're welcome!

Depending on your finances, you might consider getting both a toilet and sink plunger. Very useful! The cheap (practically disposable) drain snakes are also worth picking up.

Also, you may not be aware that there are safety can openers that DO NOT create a dangerous edge. It's 10$ more but far less than a trip to urgent care.

Best wishes!
