I was thinking about upgrading my phone because its crappy and old and blah blah. But a lot of the newer phones don't have storage on board. My thought would be to buy a USB-c external microSD card and reader for a new phone. Yay or nay on this being a good idea. I'm not always around fast enough data to upload to the cloud efficiently.

Why do you need the sd? For storage space or to store things off of your phone?

Most phones now days come with at least 128GB of built-in storage. If you want to store stuff outside of your phone you could just use an external drive like AOU mentioned.

Well that's a good point. I haven't seen their post yet so I don't know what it said. But I could buy a USB-C solid state drive and dump info over that way
