I was thinking about upgrading my phone because its crappy and old and blah blah. But a lot of the newer phones don't have storage on board. My thought would be to buy a USB-c external microSD card and reader for a new phone. Yay or nay on this being a good idea. I'm not always around fast enough data to upload to the cloud efficiently.

I don't see why you couldn't. I've routinely use an otg cable with a USB flash drive to move files between my android phone and Mac OS. Properly formatted I don't see why it wouldn't see your SD card as removable USB storage.
