I'm aware matrilineal descent matters to Conservative and Orthodox Jews, but why do people in our circles care? Israel's right of return goes by grandparents and most Jews in the Western media, entertainment, academia,and white-collar work are secular. I've never seen anyone less worried if there was a Jewish father and European mother, so why bring it up at all? It's not magic, it's just the best an ancient people lacking paternity tests could do.

Why should you care? The mother teaches the culture to the kids. Do you want a White Christmas? Then get a White mom for your kids.

If for example you have a Mexican mom, you get tamales for Christmas and wake up in the morning in pajamas to open gifts, and that becomes the cultural thing your kids do as an adult. If you've got a Slavic mom you have borscht first course and then a feast of fish dishes on Christmas Eve and open gifts that night after dinner (NOT a shopping day), go to Church, then celebrate the next day Christmas Day with a feast of meats and listen to Slavic Christmas music all Christmas season, you grow up and THAT's how you celebrate within your culture.

If you've got a jewish mother, then you do jew stuff on chanukkah, skip Christmas, and have dual citizenship (right of return my ass).

But how does that increase Jewishness more than a father or be any more worthy of note?

Because other jews classify half-jews differently. A daughter is easier to be controlled. So they place their slightly more obedient half-breeds above. Also, see theory of rape; its their defense mechanism against conquering.

Kids brought up with a jewish mother are also taught by the jewish religion that the jewish mother makes the kids automatically a jew. Their entire tribe knows it and treats them (whether non-religious or religious) as jews, that's the free ticket into the tribe. The semite tribe also teaches that the kid of a non-jew is a non-jew, and the kids have to prove themselves by being religious and officially convert.

That's a religious rule, but since most Jews are secular, why would you expect them to treat someone with a Jewish dad as any different? Would you really call them less Jewish?
