Not necessarily to beat it but to play it

When they're old enough to understand how to play

Yeah totally, and with accompanying hand eye co-ordination ability.

Not sure if it were a good thing or not, i had My elder son playing Assassins Creed/ Midnight Club/ Mod nation racing on the ps3 when he was 3 - probably took till about 4 before his hand dexterity/ co-ordination skills improved to navigate gameplay successfully without continual help and respawning.

As long as gaming is kept to a limit and not too intense for their mind (gore, sex stuff) then I think games are good for problem solving, timing, etc.

President Reagan said "we're raising a generation of fighter pilots" when he saw video gaming.

As young as 5 under supervision. 8 and above unsupervised.

IF you are restricted to a NES title. Anything modern requires extreme restrictions but not a complete moratorium because kids will simply go to their friends' houses to play and that is worse than not playing anything. Choose your battles wisely, so you are not caught unaware.

All things in moderation

Could be any age as long as it's a reasonable amount of time and not 19 hours a day

'So i heard you say like 18 hours then ' - would be a typical response from my son to me setting appropriate gaming time.

"Per week? I thought you meant per day. My bad."

touche, and that would be my exact clarification.

My oldest was around 5 or 6 when he first played a game. Super Mario World was the game. It was hilarious. He kept trying to walk forward with the game until the TV was pretty much behind him. When he ran out of cord he'd go back to where he started and do it again.

Video games are a great way to bond with kids. And when you do it with them it's much easier to teach moderation... Retro gaming IMO is the way to go for family gaming.

Agreed. Although, i believe it's important to actually be involved with them in the game playing and not simply used as a device or tool just to distract them and leave unattended (pretty much like all things really).

I don't know why a kid would want to play the old Mario games. The graphics look terrible on a modern TV and it was really easy to die without having any fun. The newer games have modern graphics and are much more forgiving with safe areas to explore.
