I'd say they don't have their redirect set up properly in .htaccess or whatever they're using.
My browser is redirecting http to https if possible. Now I see why I get the https page if I type the url without https in the address bar. And now your comment about them having an error in their redirect makes more sense.

Weird because you can type "web.archive.org" into the address bar without the https and it still redirects to the https page just fine.

If you copy/paste the url without the https it still redirects fine. Why was there a problem when clicking the link from poal?
No idea. I just know there are very rigid ways of entering the rules for http -> https redirects on web servers. There's dozens of ways you can mess up, so take a guess.
