One of my first strong memories was the day of the JFK assassination. Mom and I were in the kitchen cooking a hamburger lunch for me with the TV on in the livng room, turned up so mom could hear her talk show. The newscaster broke into the broadcast and announced JFK had been shot at Dealey Plaza. Mom said "Oh My God" and looked like she was incredibly upset and about to cry. I had no idea what it all meant at that moment, but my shock of seeing mom go from everything is wonderful to more upset than I had ever seen before has stayed with me all of these years. I even brought up that memory in the hospital as we talked about family memories a day before she died.

The '60s were tumultuous times. I was "aware" after the JFK event. The riots, the RFK and MLK assassinations, the '68 DNC Convention, Nuclear war fears, the Nixon/Humphreys Election, Vietnam reports every night, Now those radicals that caused the tumult became college professors and have ascended to other positions of power creating the mess we have today.
