If it is my most vivid memory is debatable, but my 2nd oldest memory is my first birthday party. It was in my cousins back yard in the late '70s. I was wearing courdory overalls and a red and white stiped shirt. My mom wanted me to come to the table and eat some cake and open presents, but all I wanted to do was sit in my cousins go kart. It wasn't powered, there was an opening in the bottom where your feet hit the ground and you pushed it along with your leg power. I wasn't strong enough to move it forward (this thing weighed 3-5 times my weight) but I could move it backwards, and looked over my shoulder and steered with one hand like I saw my parents do when they drove their cars in reverse. My mom picked me up by the straps of my overalls and I squirmed to get back into the cart. She told me if I ate some cake, I could go and play in the car some more. I sacrfed down that piece of cake so quickly I got icing all over my face and didn't care. I ran back to the car. After some more pushing that beast around, my legs were burning. This was the first time I had ever felt muscle burn and didn't know what was going on. Soon I wasn't able to move the car at all and was frustrated, I didn't know why the hell my legs just didn't do what I knew they could, and why the hell were they burning. My mom told me I needed a nap. I said "no" and and tried to move it some more and just fell asleep. I vaguely remember being picked up and put into the back seat of the car (car seats weren't a thing back then, neither were seat belts in the back seats of cars).

One of my first strong memories was the day of the JFK assassination. Mom and I were in the kitchen cooking a hamburger lunch for me with the TV on in the livng room, turned up so mom could hear her talk show. The newscaster broke into the broadcast and announced JFK had been shot at Dealey Plaza. Mom said "Oh My God" and looked like she was incredibly upset and about to cry. I had no idea what it all meant at that moment, but my shock of seeing mom go from everything is wonderful to more upset than I had ever seen before has stayed with me all of these years. I even brought up that memory in the hospital as we talked about family memories a day before she died.

The '60s were tumultuous times. I was "aware" after the JFK event. The riots, the RFK and MLK assassinations, the '68 DNC Convention, Nuclear war fears, the Nixon/Humphreys Election, Vietnam reports every night, Now those radicals that caused the tumult became college professors and have ascended to other positions of power creating the mess we have today.

Politically speaking? The first Kennedy assassination.

Elementary school, we had been learning about the NASA program. We were watching the Challenger launch, pictures on the wall of the astronauts next to a signed photo of the President.
The day of the launch we brought in a TV to watch it. When it exploded in midair, live on TV the whole class went silent, with the pictures of those who just died staring at us.

I have a similar memory from gradeschool. It was a trip learning it was all bullshit.

My oldest memory is quite vivid. I was about 2 and a half to 3 years old. It took place a small time before I was run over. My mom was gone for a couple days. When she got home she was drunk. She had a boyfriend with her. We were hungry. I asked for something to eat, not for me but for my baby sister. I was beat by him so badly I could barely open my eyes. Then I was thrown in a closet for the rest of the day.

I don't retain memories well due to PTSD. I've just grown used to it. My bf likes it because he can tell me the same story over and over and I rarely call him out in it.

The most vivid one right now is of a few years ago when I had to put my cat to sleep. It was awful and it has faded a lot and I know it will fade more.

well it was adult life but I had to put a great dane down cause he bit my child (thru no fault of his own I dont think) but it was a horrible experience.

There are many. Isn't it more significant the older they are? Like a vivid memory as a child is more notable than yesterday or last year?

Indeed, my first memory though nothing special I'm able to recall w/ my father in the backyard working on my mother's car to this day.

I guess I remember playing with my dads brace and bit, and releasing the bit to fall on my toe and blood spurted out. My dad looked at me and said that will teach you for playing with my tools.

It's more significant the younger you are.

My first memory.

My first thought was “this is your first memory.” My second thought was “remember that you thought that”.
