I always use "grey" just to get people fired up. "Gray" was used in early America as one of countless ways to say "we're different from England now." A group of early sjw influencers got a newspaper to start using it, and the sheep all just sort of went along with it without question until it became a "this is sparta" sort of dog whistle for the "this is murica" group.
