WTF? That's not how oil ratings work.

Did you mean 5w-20? If your engine is rated for a 30 weight and recomends 10w-30 you are wasting money and reducing the life of your engine with a 5w-20. Your engine will always reach the same operating temperature when running, even in winter, so the second number should never be "adjusted" for winter.

You can choose to get a lower "w" number oil for colder climates. The w stands for "winter" and it means that when cold the oil behaves the same as an oil with that "weight" (viscosity). So a 5w-20 acts as a 5 weight oil when cold and a 20 weight oil when at engine operating temperature.
