I know that you are being rhetorical but... Prior to the grid expansion, we had tailors. They would take your measurements and you would wear your fit. Housewives would beg you to let them patch it up so that you would not look so rough if anything happened. Or be taken back to the tailor. Eventually there was mass production. Yes. Mass production helped a lot. But even those mass produced didn't come from China, and could be worn your entire life.
