That is so sad. The kids here just grunt when I feel like they should be plenty old enough to talk. My one neighbor has two kids, I think they are a boy and a girl but it's hard to tell. I met her because she had a kitten she let out and it ran into my apartment at midnight so I kept her overnight and asked her about her in the morning. They ended up getting two more kittens that they let loose (we're on the third floor and supposedly the kittens are afraid of the stairs - I'd never felt my cats out, but there's nothing I can really say, none of the rules are enforced here any longer). I saw the older child (boy?) and asked him what the new kitten's name was. He grunted. I had to ask three times before he finally said it in a way I could understand - Leo. He's probably 6. We hear the kids throwing themselves at the walls in fits. The mom just screams at them to shut up. She said they are out all the time because the older one is tall enough to unlock the deadbolt. Sigh. I don't have kids, but I do have a cat who opens cabinets (and the freezer when he found out he could cool himself off) and baby proofed them. These parents just let them run wild.
