At my apartment complex, toddlers are running in the walkways and common areas at midnight. I don't get it. But they are feral children, so I'm guessing the parents are passed out.
Why do you live in a low class apartment complex? You are a sum of people you surround yourself with.
I've been working since I was 14. I have zero debt. I'm in my mid 40s and have savings but it's not enough I buy a house outright. I will not go into debt over a house unless I have a partner for it because we will need to be able to help one another. Right now prices are stupid high.
I moved here in 2015 and it was well maintained and the people were middle class. It was bought shortly after I moved and they started offering loans to get trash to move in, they removed the grass and trees, and let people dump trash and scream at one another. I was hoping it would get a bit better but when it didn't I started looking for a new place but then the plandemic hit.
My rent has nearly doubled at this crappy place since I moved here. I do not want to downsize and that is what it would take to move to a nicer place. I cannot afford a house out here and really don't know that I want to deal with the debt of the type I could afford. I wouldn't mind moving states yet again but I'm with a great guy and I know he doesn't want to leave here.
I am not willing to go to an even smaller apartment that will cost me even more.
Had an ex with a sister that was like this. I recall driving past their home one cold day and seeing three little girls in summer dresses and barefoot outside in the cold. Parents locked the kids out while they got high and had sex. I took the kids to mcdonalds and fed them (they ran all over the place on the tables and stuff super embarrassing), then woke the parents up and shoved the kids into the house.
The wasted parents were pissed I fed the kids (they had jelly sandwiches for dinner after all). I just left. Made me disgusted.
Kids that are left to their own devices generally become victims in one way or or another, at some point in their life.
That is so sad.
The kids here just grunt when I feel like they should be plenty old enough to talk. My one neighbor has two kids, I think they are a boy and a girl but it's hard to tell. I met her because she had a kitten she let out and it ran into my apartment at midnight so I kept her overnight and asked her about her in the morning.
They ended up getting two more kittens that they let loose (we're on the third floor and supposedly the kittens are afraid of the stairs - I'd never felt my cats out, but there's nothing I can really say, none of the rules are enforced here any longer). I saw the older child (boy?) and asked him what the new kitten's name was. He grunted. I had to ask three times before he finally said it in a way I could understand - Leo. He's probably 6.
We hear the kids throwing themselves at the walls in fits. The mom just screams at them to shut up. She said they are out all the time because the older one is tall enough to unlock the deadbolt. Sigh. I don't have kids, but I do have a cat who opens cabinets (and the freezer when he found out he could cool himself off) and baby proofed them. These parents just let them run wild.
Kittens are probably running for their lives- I'd grab them and take them to the nearest no kill shelter. Sad thing is most likely child welfare services wouldn't help the situation at all. Grunting children lead to grunting criminal adults.
