I got to thinking back to high school, when I had 4 good, close friends. After they drifted away, I never made new friends. Sitting alone at night contemplating that is kind of lonely when I realize I'm sitting in the joy that is middle age with no close human contact like I had as a teenager/20s.

So how many friends do y'all have? No acquaintances, or people you hang out with. Real friends.

I have lots of people whom I enjoy socializing with frequently, and with whom I regularly exchange minor favors in a reciprocal manner.

I have exactly two people whom I could count on in a truly dire situation, and I genuinely believe they would at least consider risking significant problems for themselves to help me in such circumstances. Interestingly, these two are also the ones I sometimes go the longest without socializing with, and would be the first to tell me to ehff off if I asked them for a minor favor that inconvenienced them slightly. These are my true friends.
