A mental disability was my first thought. Maybe he's usually able to take care of himself, but perhaps his washing machine broke and he doesn't know what to do. Or his water got turned off for whatever reason. There are services to help out adults with mild autism so they can be mostly self sufficient, but they aren't perfect.
