When i was a kid we went to pigeon forge, stayed in a cabin, it was alright but it really is a weirdly incoherent tourist trap.
A more relaxing mountain vacation I had around that time was to Cherokee NC, I went before the whole place was renovated so it looked like it did back in the 70s and the roads were shit but now its got a shiny new coat of paint and better roads. There's a park with rides up the mountain and some cherokee cultural shows but mostly it's a nice little mountain town with good food and a few interesting shops and activities. There was a pub with some great fried foods and deck built into the gorge of the waterway that was just beautiful, don't know how it looks now though.
It's a good weekend trip location and I think they have a casino if that's up your alley.
