I think our normal vacation of spending a week in a cabin on a lake in the rockies, seeing maybe a dozen people total, ruined our definition of "going on vacation in the mountains."

-=edit=- to clarify... Gatlinburg, pigeon forge, sevierville... it's a 12-mile-long clusterfuck of carnival sideshows and metal-fatigue "hillbilly rollercoasters" and ripleys-branded shit museums and a 24/7 traffic jams of trustfund kids in their shiny riceburning carollas with popcorn popper mufflers.

Literally any where else in the country would be quieter, more relaxing, more stress-free.

I don't understand why people would go back.

Granville Tennessee is my go to place in that area. It's relaxing and peaceful. I bought 17 acres up there and built a huge house on the very top of a mountain for my mom, but it's been sold.

Shit I think my daughter best friends dad bought it. 17 acres, huge house, pond/lake ~2 years ago in Granville.

Our land was attached to Billy Carters. We were good friends with him before he died. He was one of the richest cattleman in this country.

I have an unopened 6 pack of Billy beer.

Not specifically Gatlinburg but Pigeon Forge we went for a bit. Right next door. It's OK. We stayed in a hotel, not a cabin.

It reminds me of all the east coast seaside vacation towns loaded with tourist trap stuff. But it is beautiful there.

We stayed in Gatlinburg and could walk to the strip. Way too crowded during the summer. We stayed in Pigeon Forge and liked it much better. We avoided all the garbage tourist traps and enjoyed the region. We avoided downtown Gatlinburg like the plague, as well as the kitch places in Pigeon.

We drove through the natl park to get to our place (far south end of Gatlinburg) and missed the turnoff to get off that highway, ended up having to drive through downtown. God what a cluster.

I got family that lives in the Smokies and unfortunately that's just how most of Tennessee is. I've driven through small towns in East Tennessee that have worse traffic than Memphis.

I say most of state because the northwest corner of Tennessee is a hidden gem.

They're all tourist traps. Ok for extended family vacations where you want to e.g. trade off who watches the kids each day so the adults can go hiking or whatnot.

That sounds fucking amazing, I can't believe I never heard of this place. Sorry to hear you didn't like it, not everyone enjoys the same sort of vacation.

When i was a kid we went to pigeon forge, stayed in a cabin, it was alright but it really is a weirdly incoherent tourist trap.

A more relaxing mountain vacation I had around that time was to Cherokee NC, I went before the whole place was renovated so it looked like it did back in the 70s and the roads were shit but now its got a shiny new coat of paint and better roads. There's a park with rides up the mountain and some cherokee cultural shows but mostly it's a nice little mountain town with good food and a few interesting shops and activities. There was a pub with some great fried foods and deck built into the gorge of the waterway that was just beautiful, don't know how it looks now though.

It's a good weekend trip location and I think they have a casino if that's up your alley.

I know a place but I'm not telling or it will just wind up fucked up as well.

dude it's fucking awesome.

went to the Smokies with some buddies backpacking. got rained out last day and went into town. fucking a. should have done a trip just to Gatlinburg.

lots of fun, great food, tons of bars and entertainment, great looking women who aren't liberal freaks. we didn't but it looked like renting a side by side and crusing through the streets and trails would be a fucking blast.

was a bit commercialized ( i think something like 20 dinner shows, but hey if that's your thing) but i thought it was a great place.

There's a better place nearby. A campground called Nolichucky Gorge campground in Erwin, TN. You can rent a cabin there or tent camp. Gatlinburg is touristy and gross. Not a good example of Tennessee. The one thing I enjoyed in Gatliburg was the Riepley's Aquarium and walking by the river next to it. But I prefer Nolichucky.
