wish we could turn back time to the good old days
Why don't you tell me about your mother's kitchen?
We always lived in rentals. She'd get home and kick me out of the kitchen so she could get a healthy meal on the table quickly without someone underfoot. I remember her calling me from work and walking me through spaghetti sauce a few times when she knew she'd be late getting home.
Big windows overlooking the backyard. Always something delicious smelling either simmering on the stove or baking in the oven. Immaculate. Parkay flooring and orange Formica countertops. On the second level of a 3 level home along with the formal dining room and formal living room. Gosh, sounds lofty and prestigious when I put it in words. Really, it was an average, middle income (from only dad’s wages) home in an ordinary neighborhood.
Wooden Spoons. Lots and lots of wooden spoons.
My dad virtually built our house by himself in 1964 at age 29, we moved in just before Christmas that year with subfloors, temporary kitchen cabinet that held the sink and one for the stove. He was a gifted cabinet maker turned carpenter/contractor/homebuilder and later a developer. The house had natural wood trim and moldings throughout. Dad finally built custom maple cabinets for mom's kitchen about 1967, the windows overlooked the back yard. The kitchen was spotless. A 1950s 15cuft white Kelvinator refrigerator with pink interior and a gleaming stainless steel ~1964 Tappan Fabulous 400 drop in range with hood.. The smells of dinner or desert in the air. Both the refrigerator and stove worked fine for 50+ years until they were replaced with a more modern refrigerator and stove.
Yes, wonderful memories of a simple childhood that always makes me very appreciative and grateful to my dear departed folks.
Noone went to bed until the kitchen was spotless.
Something was always on the stove or in the oven. It was always hot. The smells where amazing, except when she found the dried cod my father loved. I miss the smells and noises from those carefree days.
Wood stove. Pile of wood. Table. Fridge. Probably a cat. Cow outside most likely.
The dream. And/ Or sheep.
