I have seen multiple car crashes on video, news/copsshows and stuff, my observation is this.

After the impact no matter how bad, if the windscreen is intact, the fucking windscreen wipers ALWAYS start to work.

WTF, is this some kind of "How do magnets work?" shit or what?

My guess is the driver bumps the stick with the impact and turns them on. Getting flung forward like a ragdoll, you are bound to hit all kinds of stuff.

Same. Even just the force of the wreck could slap the stick up. Back in the LongLongAgo when it was a switch on the dash that you turned, this didn't happen.

Having been in a spinout collision once, can confirm. It's crazy how your body just gets flung all around the cabin.
