The danger is not the robots becoming self aware and deciding to exterminate all humans. The danger, that we already face, is the robots being capable of carrying out mass murder when a small group of people command them to.

Don’t worry about the future possibility of robots deciding to kill us. Worry about the present, imminent danger of people deciding to use robots for mass murder.
Imagine a swarm of bomb carrying aerial drones descending on an open stadium full of people. That is possible right now with commercially available robots.
We may ban civilian aerial drones after an incident like that but governments will still have robots of all kinds and governments are the biggest mass murderers in history.
You know, I was telling a coworker that AI commanded drone swarms could exterminate humans for 100s of square miles . Heat seeking , DNA sniffing , drones carrying cluster munitions, poison gas, bunker buster missiles, bio warfare munitions etc. Imagine thousands of them highly choreographed and coordinated. Scary shit man.
