Seems like it's the cyclical nature of mankind. Brave or enterprising souls travelling farther away and taming new lands to be away from the masses then having some fucking asshole make it easier for the masses to migrate in and muck it all up. Usually under the auspice of making the transport of goods more economical. Then there's big wars and a bunch of people die off. We've either gotten away from that last point or we've been saving it all up for a big churn. Hot money's on the latter.
