So I take the top off, clean up the head and internals, test it out. Picture is perfect now. Put the cover back on, and picture is back to messed up/streaky. What is my malfunction?

Edit: thanks guys. Seems I just had to beat the distortion out of it. Note I can enjoy some poky little puppy.

Must be some cold solder joints the cover is pushing on the PCB where they are located.

Remove the cover, play a tape and gently tap around the PCBs with the back of a screwdriver. You’ll eventually locate them.
