If serious , mostly because "go forth and multiply" and the idea that God gave us the earth led to an early idea of Manifest Destiny. To save people is to add to Gods army that would eventually rise to defeat evil once and for all. Obviously a whole lot more with very much more nuance, but thats the idea.
