The problem is I'll need to do it frequently and won't be able to do the whole place at once etc
You still may be better off moving furniture, ripping out carpet, and then getting a few rugs to cover the sub flooring in key areas until you can get a more permanent hard floor installed. If the carpet is so bad that it requires frequent cleaning, appearances are your last worry. Old and destroyed carpet off-gasses, holds dust, mildew, dander, etc.. which can wreck havoc on respiratory / immune systems.
But, you can always just get a shopvac and use really hot, soapy water and then just literally lather, rinse, repeat. The idea is to soak the carpet enough to loosen debris and then vacuum it out.
