I'm assuming the best one would keep the water scolding hot? I've rented carpet washers and they are nothing compared to the ones the 'pros' use.

That's the plan but I can't do that yet because too much furniture has no where to go and no one who can put it there. The carpet is near condemn levels and needs washed regularly.

Well, if you can afford it, the pros are great. But like I said, the best I've experienced was the rentals from the grocery stores, though I don't even know if they still do that anymore.

The problem is I'll need to do it frequently and won't be able to do the whole place at once etc

You still may be better off moving furniture, ripping out carpet, and then getting a few rugs to cover the sub flooring in key areas until you can get a more permanent hard floor installed. If the carpet is so bad that it requires frequent cleaning, appearances are your last worry. Old and destroyed carpet off-gasses, holds dust, mildew, dander, etc.. which can wreck havoc on respiratory / immune systems.

But, you can always just get a shopvac and use really hot, soapy water and then just literally lather, rinse, repeat. The idea is to soak the carpet enough to loosen debris and then vacuum it out.
