They have the freedom of association. We (broader society) do not have that freedom. This (intentionally) leads to the madness that we around us.
Let me be more precise: We do not have the freedom of dissociation. (Without the freedom to disassociate, there is no real freedom of association.)
When there is a bad actor in the Amish community, they 'shun' the individual, provide no community, no support, no communication. The bad actor is then forced to either leave or behave and ask the community for forgiveness.
In our society, it's illegal to do the same to a bad actor. E.g. I can't -not- serve them at my restaurant or grocery store unless they break a law on my property.
In my opinion, true freedom of association would solve so many problems.
That would get abused so hard so fast. Like the removal of someone’s ability to buy and sell for refusing a vaccine or “affirming a child’s preferred gender” etc.
Their society works because they are moral. Our society was corrupted by the most immoral creatures to ever exist and they successfully infiltrated every level of government and media.
Point being, we have very limited ability to reject immoral behavior.
On an individual level, being able to say "No, you are a bad person. I won't partake in commerce with you." is very powerful.
