Just minding your own business, driving, all of a sudden horrendous clunking and scraping ensues and you see a large metal shaft rolling down the highway behind you. Mondays, heh.

I did on a jeep xj. It was the rear back u-joint that went out. Pulled the drive shaft off and drove it home with the front wheels. It made a hell of noise when she went.

Yeah, 4wd would have been nice. Wouldn’t have had brakes though. Air brake truck, and the shaft beat up the chambers on its way out.

Came here to say I did the same thing in my '69 CJ5. I was in the mountains trout fishing and as I was coming down the mountain the rear back u-joint gave up the ghost. I dropped the shaft, tossed it in the bed, then put the Jeep in 4-H and drove the 90 miles home with the front wheels.

This, exactly this happened to me as well, in '98 with my '92 wrangler. I hit a pot hole, and a bolt on the U joint snapped. The drive shaft slapped around underneath until it fell off and slid to the side of the road. Stopped to grab it and drove 20 miles home on my front wheels.

I had my driveshaft stolen out of my 72 AMC Gremlin by spics. I was 17, go out to my car notice my wheels are chocked by bricks. Start my car put it in drive , nothing happens. Look underneath, shit no drive shaft.

Call Grampa, get car towed to their house , get a junkyard driveshaft. Grampa says," I think those damn spics were after your transmission."

Grem or grem x? Wtf would a spic need a basic grem transmission? Wtf was it interchangeable with. I'm guessing you wasn't the 304 motor correct?

Lil.straight 6 232 motor

Borg Warner or torqueflite?

Lost the front u joint on an old F100 doing about 30. Sent the ass end up in the air, destroyed the driveshaft itself, knocked my rear end out of whack, and fucked up the road.

Had there been airbags at the time. I bet that would have deployed them. Went from a hum to no driveshaft in like 30 secs.

Don’t want to brag, but I was going about 70 down the highway in a 20 ton dump truck. Sure am glad I didn’t kill anybody.

I’ve lost a few all from the rear u joint thank god

Yes, I have had U-joints break multiple times. I had an old Chev 4wd with high angles that chewed them up. Luckily I would still be able to move the vehicle using the front end. Always carried a spare U-joints, too.

Never. I always pay attention to any felt floor vibrations. The faster you go, the worse it gets etc...

Also, when you catch them at the beginning stage of failure , they're easier to change.

Does nobody change their own oil and just do a quick visual/rattle test anymore?

No us normal folk check ujoints on oldies every fuel filter change. Since filters today are dogs got and most can't afford a nice system that can be cleaned and reused for life of truck filters should be done every 15k in miles

Funny thing, I’m under there at least twice a week. Everything was fine on Friday.

Might of hit something hatred the joint itself

I do drive a loose shaft.
