Hiroshima and Nagasaki were airburst explosions. More destructive of buildings, but leaves less radiation behind because basic physics. Radiative power decreases at the square of the distance. Hence, habitable relatively quickly. Chernobyl crapped radiation everywhere, and then spread directly radioactive materiel all over the place.

Overhyped to sone degree, yes. Radiation will kill you from cancer some decades hence, but that's less immediate than Hollywood unless you take a shitton of rads right now. The big deal is moreso alpha particles inhaled with dust. Alpha is very lethal, but cant penetrate your skin. Breath in dust though...and it's already inside you, and you're effed.
