There are a lot of really great places throughout the deserts, mountains and north coast of California, with a lot of natural beauty, and away from the problems that plague the big cities. Eastern California is nice, too. You do, however, still have to contend with high taxation and otherwise onerous regulations, due to the political structure at the state level.
