Our annual 2-week vacation is coming up. Over the past few years we've stayed in or travelled through Santa Claus (Indiana,) Future City (Illinois,) Picher (Oklahoma,) Louisiana (Missouri,) Liberal (Kansas,) St. Joseph (Missouri)

We'll end up near Salida CO, and are looking forward to taking our jeep this year to do some exploring around tin cup pass in St Elmo CO. (2017 wrangler sport unlimited)

We'll stop near Abilene KS for a day or 2 on the way out to visit friends, but our plans are wide open otherwise.

We take back roads whenever possible, and love visiting some less-well-know sites on the way.

We're open for suggestions... like these places we've stopped at over the past 2 years:

Superfund site in Picher, psychiatric hospital/ museum/prison in St. Jo, Dorothy's House/museum in Liberal, Santa Claus museum (and post office, amusement park, Santa's village hotel) Buffalo Farm in Longford KS (unfortunately Ray Smith passed away, but we did pet a zebra there, and scratched our names in the sandstone ridge nearby) Got fingerprinted in Monroe City MO, An amazing steak house in Buena Vista CO (Quincy's. Go there. Fucking amazing steaks!)

Keep em coming! I'm at work so can't reply quickly (hell can't even get on poal, the network has it blocked.) But I am checking suggested places... thanks everyone!

Can’t go wrong with Tincup but I think part of the pass is closed right now. Should be able to get to the top from the eastern side, but reaching Tincup might not be possible due to a river crossing that is impassable as of a couple days ago. Make sure to check weather/road reports. I have had pretty good luck with On X Off-road app for maps and trail conditions. But plenty of trails and what not in the area to explore. St Elmo is kinda touristy for my blood, but it’s worth stopping through if you haven’t been. Monarch crest near Salida is supposed to be awesome if you like mountain biking/hiking. Manitou springs/old Colorado city is a cool place to check out, again a bit touristy but you’ll be a tourist so enjoy! Check out old stage road which will take you up to Victor Colorado from Colorado Springs. Salida has river surfing which I’ve heard is a good time.

Thanks for the suggestions! Some friends are camp hosts at twin lakes, so we hang out around that area quite a bit when we get there. We've been to St Elmo 2 years in a row, my wife loves the chipmunks and the hummingbirds. Thx for the heads up on tincup pass poss being closed, I'll be sure to check out the reports.

You could stop by Hannibal, MO if you like Mark Twain. Another suggestion is the Geographic Center of America in Lebanon, KS.

My wife and I actually met in Kansas about 30 years ago, and in the 15 years I lived there I never once made it to see the center of the country. Might just do that this year; we'll be near there.

Random memory from there: There was a place called outside of Longford; 30 years ago I got to meet the owner/operator/world traveller Ray Smith. We got a tour of his ranch, his collection of "stuff" from around the world (he had been on every continent, and had collected souvenirs - even if just a rock - from a huge number of counties he went to over his life, got to see his giant pinwheel-shaped pen for the buffalo, and saw the collection of lions tigers and bears that he rescued over the years. He set aside something like 40 acres for them, let them out of their 'cages' (luxury condos) in turns for a day at a time to enjoy the grass, trees, the pond, and they ate good too... Ray was also a butcher iirc but they always had fresh meat. One of the very young lion cubs he took in had gotten hit by a car or something like that, broke both his back legs. Ray (also a vet) patched the lil guy up and let him stay in the barn until he healed up and had the pins/casts removed. During the few months, the cub ended up becoming best buds with the couple of dogs that Ray owned, and every car that came up the driveway was greeted by two very friendly dogs (gotta rub the belly before you can knock on the door) and one very LARGE cat... also gotta rub the lion's belly. It was very cool. Not sure what happened to the rescues since then, but we drove past last year (didn't stop, not sure who owns it now) and were surprised to see a zebra come galloping across a field when we stopped at an intersection of 2 dirt roads. Very friendly, came right up to the corner of the fenced in field to say "hi," and absolutely loved having his ears scratched. It used to be a nice place to stop at just to say "Hi" and get some buffalo burgers at the old diner in town, and if you're in the area you can still see the enormous concrete buffalo statue he had built. There are a lot of cool places like that around the Abilene-Herington-Milford area.

If they're leaving Ohio going west, the only thing I'd suggest would be WPAFB.

You could try Starved Rock in Galena IL, it's a park with a bunch of sandstone canyons. Neat place but I'm not sure how touristy it's gotten as I haven't been there in over a decade.

Thanks! I checked out their page; looks gorgeous!

Any Rodeos you can go see?
