What's the matter with animation? Has nothing to do with growing up, animation is an art form for one thing and cartoons can be perfect vehicles for just about anything.
Bullwinkle was for adults. Family guy (sucked mostly), King of the Hill; Bugs Bunny; animaniacs, etc., lots of "cartoons" for kids are really for adults.
There was a cartoon called Wing Commander, it was great.
Japanese animation is generally brilliant stuff. Fist of the North Star, Judge, Ghost in the Shell; Grave of the Fireflies...
British animation "When the Wind Blows" is f*ng brilliant.
