I think you're missing the point that these guys literally coined the term, or at least made it a household word. Perhaps before you were born. They can decide who's runner up and who's honorable mention, as they please. This was fidonet stuff pre AOL and compuserve, before emails and before their website. The joke is that he was "in the running."
