Summary

  • Atko basically built Voat, he was the programming webmaster who wrote all the code
  • Putt came in a bit later, helped Atko with the community side of things
  • Putt was functionally retarded when it came to programming
  • After a couple years of building and maintaining voat, atko decided to leave
  • My assumption about Atko's leaving is due to Putt, because Putt was a greedy bastard
  • After Atko left Voat, things got weird. The remainin admin (Putt) began interacting with the community less and less
  • Weird voat outages without explanation.
  • Without Atko the site was stuck in limbo, no more updates
  • Voat hits "money issues"
  • Putt goes around trying to suck off VC's for money
  • Putt gets increasingly andry at the community because their content makes it near-impossible to get a VC to back the site
  • Putt eventually secures VC money for himself.
  • Putt gets even angrier at the community because of the VC, starts lashing out
  • Putt almost entirely stops interacting with the community, except to make some long melodramatic announcement post talking about how difficult the life of an admin is
  • Most voat users left at this point
  • Voat slowly dies
  • Putt blames everyone but himself
  • The end

To add to this, the VC that funded Voat for awhile was Private Internet Access (PIA). They cut all funding at one point, and did so in a manner which was at least bad faith if not outright breach of contract. Putt did nothing about this until the site ran out of funds.

I'm not sure I agree on the slowly dying part. As I remember it, the shutdown was kind of a surprise, though it probably shouldn't have been, given how reluctant Putt was to do any merch sales beyond the first run.

If original voat, yes, people were told to go there because they could avoid censorship without the bullshit of the chans. The chan boards really do suck for usability.

The shills went through the roof and worked overtime to discredit Q. It was all rather obvious and comical. Look at the pavilion bot response (Canbot) which followed mention in this thread.

I always took his comments towards the end that even after PIA pulled their funding they owned the copyright to the code and were pressuring him to either license it (for a fee) or just to shut down else face a lawsuit. Probably the latter.

I've seen 2 interviews with Putt/Justin since the shutdown. In both, he blamed the shutdown of the site on the users, basically, being too unruly to control and he was tired of the headache. I have no idea how much truth there is to that. or Boobs would have been in a much better position to comment on how difficult it is to maintain a site of this nature. However, given his interactions with the community prior to the shutdown, and his personal views he'd leak during said conversations, I'm inclined to believe this was the truth, simply because Justin came off as a very weak and very timid man who lacked the convictions to stand behind the stuff he would claim he was a pillar for.

Towards the end all he complained about was the hosting costs and how he was keeping the site up out of his own pocket after PIA pulled their funding. I don't remember him complaining about EU laws, it was always the upkeep cost and he would do nothing to mitigate it even when offered help.

His name was purportedly Justin Chastain and a purported picture of him looked an overweight, gay hipster with a curled mustache and a fedora.

There are definitely plenty of Voaters who tried to ID him.

Donations to Voat were more than enough to keep it running. It was shut down because of the Hunter Biden data being released where the Q movement definitely admitted it was a fake shit test by refusing to promote the corruption revealed by the material.

The Q movement was started by Coleman Rogers, aka Pamphlet Anon, using a tripcode made by "HereComesThePain!!!". Pamph was caught on video using the Q tripcode.
